Same old same old with state unemployment numbers for August. There was minor fluctuation in the states, although those with the highest rates in July were the same as in August (Nevada at 9.5 percent and Illinois at 9.2 percent) just as those states with the lowest rates in July remained unchanged a month later (North Dakota at 3.0 percent and South Dakota at 3.8 percent.)
Overall 18 states plus the District of Columbia had increases in the jobless rate in the course of a month and 17 states posted decreases.
The jobless rate nationwide is 7.3 percent. A year ago, it was 8.1 percent.
